The Do's and Don'ts on Destination Wedding Hair & Makeup

Tuesday, November 8, 2016

To our Destination Wedding Brides....

You are planning your destination wedding and one key aspect is looking as amazing and breathtaking as the venue!

You may prefer to choose an Artist to fly out with you, so you can meet before the big day. Make a plan with them, have a trial to ensure you are completely happy with your look ahead of the day.  It is one aspect of planning from abroad that is not do-able over Skype. However, Skype can with most other of your suppliers who are based in your chosen destination.

When choosing your Hair and Makeup Artist for your Destination Wedding you want to ensure they have plenty of experience. Especially if you'll be in different elements such as sunshine all day!

Your Artist needs to ensure that the correct makeup is used in the heat of the sun.

DO opt for an experienced MU artist who has worked abroad and in different climates. If you have chosen a beach destination wedding and want a flawless beach glamour look, you will need an Artist that will know the best products for your skin. Products that will have longevity and wear well in the sunshine all day, through into the evening whilst looking fantastic in photos.

DON’T feel obliged to use your regular hair dresser who cuts and colours your hair. They may be fab as a hair dresser but a hair stylist is a completely different skill set. Go for a stylist with a lot of experience and look through their portfolio of images to find someone who you think will compliment the style of wedding you are looking for.

DO arrive a few days before the wedding to ensure you feel fresh and relaxed for the big day giving your skin time to adjust to the travelling and climate change to prevent any breakouts on the wedding day. It will also give you a chance to sort out any last minute wedding issues!

DON’T forget to prioritise your guests. You are asking them to take time off work, pay for flights and accommodation, they obviously all really wish to be there to celebrate with you! But give them a lot of notice sending out save the dates well in advance. Give them lots of practical information and info about suggested places to stay, visit, best dates to fly etc. As a nice treat for them you could also book a few additional Artists to travel too. Then you can offer them hair and makeup services on the wedding morning.

DO have a trial before - if you don’t live in the same country as your Hair and Makeup Artist - ask them to arrive a day or two before the wedding and have a trial on location, or if you are visiting in the months beforehand. This will still give you a chance to try out your look and make any tweaks or changes. You want to make sure that everything runs really smoothly on the wedding day, with no worries or stresses.

DO gather as many images together of inspiration of hair and makeup you love but also of a general feel of the whole wedding style and feel. Having these as well as an image of your dress to work through ideas at your trial before the big day

DON’T plan a British wedding abroad - embrace your destination wedding location and scenery and opt for their traditional aspects.  You may not need much in the way of decorations if you have stunning scenery. Think about your hair and makeup style within the setting.

For a beach wedding you may want a boho beach look whereas, a city Paris wedding might suit a chic glamorous up do.

DO consider timings - whilst a midday wedding in the UK is fairly popular, doing this in the 35-degree midday sun won’t be fun!

You may want a later ceremony which means more time enjoying the getting ready process and will also be comfortable for you the Bride with a full makeup look and long flowing locks.
