TOP TIPS FROM AWARD WINNING MAKE UP ARTIST GEMMA SUTTON

How to keep your make up looking super fresh all day long

Lots of my brides have the concern about their make up staying put through the ceremony until the end of the night.  It is a long day with high emotions - there are bound to be tears, a little nervous perspiration, along with the heat of the sun if you are blessed with good weather or getting hot and sweaty on that dance floor!  I ensure all of my beautiful brides have their Make Up set to look fresh from the moment it is applied to the last dance of the night.

I always, always start with a good primer and moisturiser.  This is key!   It creates a real velvet soft and smooth base, minimising pores by sealing to prevent foundation from blocking them as this can sometimes unfortunately make them appear more visible if applied without.  If you suffer from acne or have done in the past and have any pitted uneven skin a good primer will really help conceal any scarring or blemishes when applying foundation.

It will also help combat shine throughout the day and create a smooth even base for all make up application, helping it stay put for longer.  It does this my decreasing sweating through your pores and acts as a natural shield for dust, water and debris that would naturally cause your make up to wear off throughout the day, and by creating that barrier between foundation and skin, it also prevents the skin from absorbing any talc or pigment from your foundation as well as preventing talc from drawing oil from the skin.  And most make up primers (though not all) are non-comedogenic, which means they won’t break your face out or irritate your skin too.  It’s really such an alluring appearance, it’s hard to go without using one after you have tried it!

I do of course have a few of my favourites  MAC Prep+PrimeLaura MercierBenefit Stay Flawless 15 Hour PrimerSmashbox Photofinish– like foundations and moisturisers finding a good primer to suit you is dependent on your skin type, so do be aware of this when looking to purchase one.A primer isn’t just great for the face to be used before foundation application it should also be used around the eyes.  Gently patted under and around eyes and on the lids, primer acts as a three-in-one. It softens lines, counteracts discolouration and most importantly prevents from smudging or creasing by absorbing natural oils.  Paired with fully waterproof liner and mascara your eye make up won’t be going anywhere even when you have those teary moments throughout your special day.

As the Bride or one of the bridal party you will be doing lots of chatting kissing and of course sipping on champers!  One thing you will need to do is keep your lip colour topped up – the best way to keep the colour locked in is to, again, use a good primer – this will prevent your lipstick from settling into lines, giving a smooth plumped appearance for an even application.  You can then just reapply the colour or gloss when necessary.Once your make up look is complete I will always spritz my ladies with a setting spray such as  MAC FIX + or use a finishing powder  HD Brows Translucent Powder to lock in all the make up to avoid it rubbing off with all those meet and greets hugs and kisses.Although your make up will most certainly be set for the day there are a couple of products needed for those all important touchups throughout the day.  I always recommend my brides purchase the  translucent powder to keep handy – this can be used to sweep across the t-zone using a  powder brush to take away any shine absorbing any oils should they occur.  This is a fantastic product as it is translucent so you won’t get a build up that might occur if you were to keep reapplying powder foundations etc.The second is of course your lip colour – whether it is a lipstick or lipgloss or both.  Unfortunately however fantastic your primer and products are over the course of the day, chatting, kissing, eating and drinking you will inevitably want to touch up the lips to keep them looking super fresh all day long!
